The Tedium You Enjoy

Abstract

Dr. Jay Hosler, David K Goodman, ‘74 Professor of Biology at Juniata College, commenced the 2025 Liberal Arts Symposium by encouraging Juniata students to find a passion, which he refers to as a “tedium,” that can bring enjoyment and purpose to their lives, regardless of its difficulty. Through illustrating his experiences in graduate and post-doctoral research, Hosler describes his satisfaction in various career roles before ultimately finding the tedium that he enjoys the most. Hosler concludes by celebrating the academic and creative achievements accomplished by students and wishing them to discover topics that they are able to find enjoyment in.
